QR Code FAQ's

Q and A: QReating Connections with QR Codes

Q:  QR Codes – what are they?

A:  A QR Code is a two-dimensional bar code that was created by Denso-Wave, a Japanese corporation in 1994. The "QR" comes from "Quick Response,” for high-speed decoding.

Q:  How can consumers “read” a QR code?

A: Using a smartphone, the consumer takes a picture of the QR code.  The phone’s software automatically decodes the embedded information. Many Android, Nokia, and Blackberry phones come with QR code readers pre-installed. QR reader software is available for most mobile platforms.

Q: What kind of information can you embed in them?

A:  Now, you can engage with your consumers using a simple QR code in countless ways.  Examples:

  • Patrons drinking a bottle of wine in a restaurant can read about the winery and order a case of that wine for home delivery before getting the check for the meal.
  • Shoppers can get a discount as part of a QR code promotion.  Make the discount interactive by allowing users to upload it to their Facebook page and share the great deal with friends.
  • Consumers can be educated about how your product is made by linking them to a YouTube video showing the process and an interview with your CEO.
  • Instantly connect with your consumers by sending them to your Facebook or Twitter page so that they can follow you.

Q: How do you get a QR code?

A: We have partnered with a company that can create and track the QR codes for your wine labels.  Labeltronix highly recommends this way so that you measure results and effectiveness.

Q:  What should you consider about printing QR codes on labels?

A:  In your QR promotions, plan to teach the consumer about these codes and how to scan one.  You might want to include instructions on what to do when they see the unusual-looking QR code.  Also, test the code to ensure it works with a variety of mobile devices.  Test the landing page on a smartphone, preferably multiple types and networks, to make sure the viewer is getting the total experience.

Q:  How can QR codes be used to test different marketing concepts with your products?

A:  Simply create as many QR codes as you want.  Test different messages, different landing pages and incorporate them on multiple products and/or marketing collateral.  If you opt to add a QR code to your label, track the results to see how consumers respond to it.  Google Analytics is just one of the programs that can measure the success of your QR code.  If you discover the code isn’t generating traffic, re-think where the code is placed on your product, or evaluate your user directions.
